US News - New York, WPIX -- The No. 1 sunscreen to avoid is also the product with a label that reads "No. 1 Dermatologist Brand," according to an environmental group calling out the best and worst sunscreens to slather on this summer.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) says Neutrogena sunscreens contain harmful chemicals that can disrupt hormones, damage skin and even increase cancer risk.

The group released its sunscreen Hall of Shame, naming the worst sunscreen sprays, lotions and sunscreens for children.

Factors that landed lotions on the unsavory list include sprays because they could pose an inhalation risk; sky-high SPFs because the higher SPF ratings may tempt users to stay out in the sun for longer than they should and may not protect against UVA rays, which penetrate deep into the body and may cause skin cancer; and the presence of ingredients like oxybenzone, which can mimic the hormone estrogen once it enters a person's bloodstream, and retinyl palmitate.

Others brands on the list for the worst spray sunscreens and lotions include Banana Boat, Coppertone, Equate, Kroger, and Up & Up.
