Breathtaking Northern Lights shone across the country Monday night

Updated

Severe geomagnetic storms made Aurora Borealis, or the "Northern Lights" extremely visible across the entire country Monday night.

Aurora Borealis was especially prevalent in Colorado through the night. The storms reportedly brought on the strongest Northern Lights in more than a decade. Head of Boulder-based Space Weather Prediction Center Rodney Viereck said:

"I'm not surprised. The Aurora was quite active. It's been almost 10 years since we've had this kind of activity. This is one of the biggest storms we've had since 2003."

Outside of Colorado, the lights were seen from New Hampshire, Minnesota, Iowa, North Dakota, and South Dakota. They were also visible in other regions outside of the United States including the UK and Canada. People posted beautiful photos of the magnificent display to social media.

Unfortunately, the storms are not expected to be strong enough Tuesday night for more Northern Lights sightings. We're just going to have to live vicariously through these astonishing photos.
