After a year and a half together, Sean Penn and Charlize Theron have reportedly broken off their engagement, according to Us Weekly.

Sources say that Theron, 39, ended it with the "Milk" actor after their most recent trip to the Cannes Film Festival, where they made several high-profile appearances together. Recent reports said the "Mad Max" bombshell postponed the wedding for fear of marriage "ruining everything."

Theron recently called Penn the love of her life in an interview with Elle, but working on "The Last Face" with him threatened the relationship.

"Putting aside that he's my partner, he's the love of my life; for the first time, I felt that my work was really bleeding into my life and that made it hard."

Penn, 54, also praised his wife-to-be in an interview with Esquire UK, and mentioned he was ready to settle down with Theron after two notable failed marriages with Madonna and Robin Wright.

"You say I've been married twice before, but I've been married under circumstances where I was less informed than I am today," Penn said. "So I wouldn't even consider it a third marriage, I'd consider it a first marriage on its own terms if I got married again."

The A-list couple, both Oscar winners, got together in December 2013, after knowing each other for decades and secretly got engaged on a trip to Paris after one year of dating.
