On this day in history: O.J. Simpson's car chase stunned America

Updated

On June 17, 1994, the world stopped to watch one of the most infamous "car chases" in history -- that of football legend, O.J. Simpson.

The car chase, which took place on Los Angeles' 405 freeway, lasted for nearly 2 hours as Los Angeles cops surrounded Simpson's white Ford Bronco, which was driven by his friend and former teammate Al Cowlings.

More than 20 years later, we're still talking about "the chase."

Check out these interesting facts about the car chase.

1) The vehicle was driven by Simpson's longtime friend and former teammate at USC and with the Buffalo Bills, Al Cowlings.

2) The chase -- which topped out at speeds of 60 MPH -- lasted for roughly 2 hours.

3) When the chase came to an end, police found a fake goatee and mustache, a bottle of makeup adhesive, receipts from a beauty store and Simpson's passport and a gun in the white Bronco.

4) When Simpson did not turn himself in on the day of the case, Robert Kardashian (Simpson's lawyer and father of the Kardashian's) read a letter by Simpson to the media.

5) Some suspected the note read by Kardashian could be a suicide note, and the presumption was further escalated when he was found with a gun to his own head during the chase.

6) Domino's Pizza reported record delivery sales during the chase (as people were most likely glued to their television's).

7) Over a dozen helicopters and police cars followed the Bronco on Interstate 405 in Los Angeles throughout the entirety of the chase.

8) Roughly an hour and a half later, Simpson surrendered in his mansion, where he sat inside the Bronco demanding to speak to his mother for nearly another hour.

9) Before being taken into custody by police, O.J. used the bathroom in his home, called his mother and drank a glass of juice.

10) The infamous car chase proved to be one of the most memorable moments in television history.
