Don Cherry encourages Canadians to vote Josh Donaldson
The 81-year-old Don Cherry has been doing a segment on "Hockey Night in Canada"for over 30 years. The segment is called Coach's Corner and features his typically brash opinions about everything hockey. Of all times to deviate from the hockey script, Cherry picked Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals.
The non-hockey rant was about the "injustice" happening in baseball's fan voting for the upcoming All-Star game and how it directly affects Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Josh Donaldson.
Okay, so Cherry is a little off with some of his stats. The fact of the matter though is that Donaldson should be the starting third baseman over the Kansas City Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas at the upcoming All-Star game.
Donaldson has 17 homers, 45 RBI and is batting .316. Mike Moustakas has five homers, 20 RBI and is batting .318. Thanks to a concerted effort by Kansas City Royals fans, Moustakas is leading Donaldson in All-Star voting by a margin of almost 2-1.
The MLB needs to rethink the fan voting process for the All-Star game is a theme already covered by FanSided and many other media outlets. The fact that the jaded fan-voting process became front and center during a Canadian hockey broadcast of a Stanley Cup Final game, should be all the evidence required that change is needed.
