As new developments continue to emerge surrounding Richard Matt and David Sweat, the two convicted killers that escaped from Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, NY, many are wondering not only how often similar situations have arisen over the years, but also how often officers have been able to track down escaped prisoners.

The graphic below, courtesy of findthebest.com, shows the number of suspects arrested for departing (or attempting to depart from) the custody of a correctional institution or a hospital over the past ten years. As becomes clear from the graphic, the number decreased remarkably from 2006 - 2012, but experienced a sharp uptick in the following year.

As more time passes until Matt and Sweat are found and taken back into custody, concern will only continue to grow about public safety with two killers remaining at-large.
