3 Myths About Airline Tickets That Will Cost You

There's actually an art to booking an airline ticket and getting a great fare at the same time. If you know what to ask, whom to call and when not to book online, you have a chance at getting a good deal. Travel expert Peter Greenberg says that many people make three costly mistakes when booking an airline ticket:

  1. Booking too early: you'll want to wait until 45-54 days before your trip to see if prices drop.

  2. Booking weekend flights: book a Thursday departure instead of one on Friday and you'll save a lot of money.

  3. Booking during business hours: the best time to book a flight is actually Wednesday at 1 a.m. (in the time zone the airline is based). But you can't do this online -- you'll have to call the airline and talk to an actual human being.
