Nicole Kidman's 'Grace of Monaco' becomes a Lifetime Movie

Nicole Kidman's 'Grace of Monaco' Goes From Cannes to Lifetime

Nicole Kidman's Grace of Monaco is skipping the big screen altogether and heading straight for dramatic television.

After opening at last year's Cannes Film Festival, the Grace Kelly biopic will now premiere on Lifetime on Memorial Day, May 25, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The Weinstein Company first purchased the rights to Grace of Monaco at the 2013 Berlin Film Festival, but decided to sell the film directly to the women's cable network rather than attempt to release it in U.S. theaters.

The movie has faced a whirlwind of mixed reviews. Upon news that it was to have a late release in 2013, some thought it would be an Oscar contender. It was then to be released on March 14, 2014, but, as THR reports, there seemed to be a disagreement between TWC's Harvey Weinstein and director Olivier Dahan's final cut.

"There are two versions of the film for now, mine and his," Dahan said. "They want a commercial film smelling of daisies, taking out anything that exceeds that which is too abrupt, anything that makes it cinematic and breathe with life."

Then came the Cannes Film Festival where Grace's children boycotted the film's red carpet, calling the biopic "needlessly glamorized and historically inaccurate."

Grace of Monaco tells the story of former Hollywood star Grace Kelly's crisis of marriage and identity. This all takes place during a political dispute between Monaco's Prince Rainier III (Frank Langella) and France's Charles De Gaulle, and a looming French invasion of Monaco in the early 1960s. Parker Posey stars as Grace's aid while Paz Vega portrays opera singer Maria Callas.
