Officials: Virginia Tech student went overboard on cruise

ROANOKE, Va. (AP) - Officials say they believe a Virginia Tech student went overboard from a Carnival cruise ship near the Bahamas, but they've called off their search.

Carnival spokesman Vance Gulliksen says the 21-year-old man was reported missing Sunday morning from the Carnival Glory and that a review of camera footage confirmed a man went overboard.

Coast Guard Petty officer Jon-Paul Rios tells The Roanoke Times that two other Carnival ships helped search for about 24 hours, then returned to their routes.

He says the Coast Guard searched by air and sea an area of 5,500 nautical square miles from Sunday to Tuesday, then called off its search. He says officials do not release names after searches are suspended.

Virginia Tech spokesman Larry Hincker tells the newspaper that the university was notified about the search.
