Miss Canada Scores Big With National Costume

The Miss Universe pageant is gearing up in Coral Gables, Florida and one of the best parts of the preliminary competition is the National Costume Show. A writer for NPR calls it the "Olympics Of Gaudy Excess."

Each constant showcases their homeland in a glittery, elaborate and sometimes downright ridiculous ensemble - kind of like the parade before the Hunger Games.

This years costumes did not disappoint but there was one that truly stood out: Miss Canada. Twenty-something Chanel Beckenlehner marched out onto the stage framed in hockey sticks, hockey pads, a glittery jersey and a Stanley Cup replica on her head. Add a plate of poutine and a horse and it's basically everything anyone imagines Canada to be.

Ironically a Canadian hockey team hasn't actually won the Stanley Cup since 1993 when the Montreal Canadiens beat last year's champs the Los Angeles Kings.

It doesn't look like Canada will have better luck off the ice either. A former National Director of The Miss Universe Pageant taps Colombia, Jamaica, and the Philippines as the front runners for this years contest. But who cares? With that costume our neighbor to the North pretty much wins at life.
