CINCINNATI (AP/PIX11) - Elevator footage released by Cincinnati Police shows an off-duty police officer accidentally shooting himself in the stomach inside a parking garage elevator after having dinner with his wife.

Cincinnati police say Officer Darryl Jouett of the Erlanger, Kentucky, Police Department was in the elevator on Saturday night. When the elevators' doors close, Jouett pulls his .40 caliber semiautomatic handgun out of its holster and appears to try and re-holster it.

Jouett almost drops the weapon when it gets tangled in his coat. The gun fires into the elevator door as he tries to catch it.

Police tell WCPO that the bullet ricocheted off the elevator walls and struck him.

In the footage, Jouett crumbles to the ground as his wife pulls out her cellphone to call for help.

Jouett was taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center with injuries that weren't life-threatening.

The veteran officer has spent more than 25 years at the police department in Erlanger.

Capt. Mike John with the Cincinnati Police Department calls the situation "very unusual."
