Senator Harry Reid started the New Year off with a bang.
The Nevada Democrat severely injured himself Thursday while exercising, his office announced Friday in a statement.
"A piece of equipment Senator Reid was using to exercise broke, causing him to fall and break a number of ribs and bones in his face," the statement said.
Reid was exercising at his home in Henderson, a suburb of Las Vegas, when the accident occurred. It is not clear which piece of equipment broke under the Senator's strenuous workout regimen.
He was hospitalized overnight as a precaution but has since been discharged.
Senator Jeff Flake (R-AZ) did manage to crack a joke at his colleague's expense while wishing him well.
Now there's a man serious about new year's resolutions! Get well soon, @SenatorReid. See you back in DC.

Reid is expected to return this weekend to Washington, D.C., his office confirmed.
The Senate is scheduled to meet Tuesday for the first time this year.
