Uptalk is when people raise the intonation of their voice at the end of a sentence. It's becoming a common occurrence in the everyday language of both men and women. However, men and women use uptalk in very different ways.

Studies of conteststants on the popular quiz show Jeopardy had interesting findings on how men and women use uptalk. Men and women use uptalk about 37% of the time, often when one is unsure of themselves. However, the women used uptalk when they are actually right at the same rate that men use uptalk when they were wrong.

Men were also more likely to use uptalk when correcting a woman, than correcting a man. But why does this gender divide occur in our speech? Researchers believe that women tend to feel the need to downplay their success and men and encouraged to own it.

See if you notice uptalk in your day to day conversations. Afterall, it's not what you say but how you say it!
