Homosexual men make up approximately 10% of the male population but represent a disproportionate 42% of the male population that suffer with an eating disorder. Many gay men identify with their sexuality through eating disorders.

Many times, the eating disorder is associated with an internal shame rather than striving towards an external ideal. Those who suffer from the disorder often use food as an exercise of control, discipline, or punishment.
