Woman celebrates 111th birthday on 11/11
One Virginia woman had a very special birthday this year.
Rosa Beckner turned 111 on November 11 - that's 111 on 11/11. A very symmetrical event for the supercentenarian.
Her birthday has been one of significance before. Speaking with WDBJ, Rosa says she remembers her 15th birthday was the day that World War I ended.
"And at 11:00 on the 11th day the bells began to ring and the whistles began to blow, and we heard then the war is closed."
As for today, she says she's seen many innovations in her lifetime, and thinks the telephone is one of the most impressive.
"You could ring any of them on that line yourself, but if you had to go to another line then you had to have help from the operator and now you can carry the phone in your pocket."
So what's her secret? She credits her long life to the Lord, as well as staying away from alcohol and tobacco...But we think cans of beans might also have something to do with it.
She told the Roanoke Times she keeps two cans of baked beans by her side for exercise.
Well, for the world's oldest woman Misao Okawa, its relaxation that keeps her going.
She turned 116 in March and the Japanese native told The Telegraph, "Eat and sleep and you will live a long time. You have to learn to relax."
Okawa says she eats three large meals a day, and sleeps at least eight hours a night. Her favorite meal is sushi and she's reportedly never had a major illness in her life.
