Search warrants: Frein used laptop to evade manhunt
Eric Frein is escorted to a preliminary hearing on Monday, Jan. 5, 2015 at the Pike County Courthouse in Milford, Pa. Frein, 31, of Canadensis, is the lone suspect in the Sept. 12, 2014 shooting outside the Blooming Grove state police barracks in Pike County that killed Cpl. Bryon Dickson and seriously wounded Trooper Alex Douglass. Police say Frein led law enforcement on a 48-day manhunt through the Pocono woods before U.S. marshals captured him Oct. 30 near an abandoned airplane hangar. BLOOMING GROVE TOWNSHIP, Pa. (WNEP-TV) -- New information is being released about how accused cop killer Eric Frein may have stayed hidden from police for seven weeks.

Search warrants just returned in the Eric Frein investigation show that he was able to hide from police using laptops and wireless internet.

The technology may have helped him from being caught for the seven weeks that he was on the run after September's deadly ambush at the state police barracks in Pike County.

Eric Frein Allegedly Used Laptop to Evade Manhunt

That laptop and two thumb drives are being held in evidence at the Blooming Grove barracks, the very place where that attack happened nearly two months ago.

According to search warrants, during an interview at the barracks on the night he was captured, Frein admitted he used the laptop and open wireless internet accounts he found in the area while he was running from that massive manhunt.

Court documents say the laptop and two thumb drives were found in that hangar at Birchwood resort near Tannersville where U.S. Marshals captured Frein on Thursday.

State police plan to analyze the content of those drives.

Investigators hope to piece together any motive for the ambush by looking at the information on the devices

They'll be looking at internet search terms, email and contacts, messages browsing history, journals and much more.

Frein is still locked up in Pike County facing first degree murder and other charges for his alleged ambush at the barracks in September.

The shooting left Corporal Bryon Dickson dead and Trooper Alex Douglass severely wounded and led to a 48-day manhunt through Pike and Monroe Counties.

One of Frein's defense attorneys says he met with the accused cop killer in jail late Monday. He would not comment on what Frein's demeanor is, only to say "he's a 31-year-old man facing serious charges sitting in jail."

The big takeaway from this new development is that if Frein used a laptop to track where police were looking, it could explain how he was always able to stay one step ahead of them until his capture last week.
