Navy launches massive ship sideways
This is how you launch a boat.
In Marinette, Wisconsin on a chilly and windy day with gusts of up to 29 miles per hour. Watch as it barrels sideways off the slipway.
The U.S. Navy just christened this future USS Detroit, the fourth littoral combat ship of the freedom variant.
"It takes more than just cable and pipe, more than insulation and power panels, more than steel and aluminum -- and more than a bottle of bubbly -- to make a navy warship," said Rear Adm. Brian Antonio.
Launching a ship sideways like this usually occurs when there is not enough room for a stern-first launch.
