10 dead in 2 crashes hours apart in California

IRVINE, Calif. (AP) - An investigation is continuing into the fiery freeway crash of a car driven by an unlicensed teenager in Southern California that left five youths dead.

Investigators will inspect the 1995 BMW for signs of mechanical failure that might have contributed to the crash early Saturday in Orange County.

California Highway Patrol Officer Florentine Olivares said Sunday that skid marks on the freeway and the distance the car traveled after hitting a guardrail on Interstate 5 in Irvine suggest speed possibly played a role.

A 16-year-old unlicensed driver was the lone survivor of the crash.

The crash was one of two that happened just hours apart in Southern California that killed 10 people, including three members of the same teen soccer team and four recent graduates of the same high school.
