Whopping 9lb hairball removed from teenager's stomach
This is one story you might want to avoid reading over lunch. An 18-year-old girl in Kyrgyzstan has had a HUGE 9lb hairball removed her stomach, and pictures from the emergency surgery have been shared with the world.
Ayperi Alekseeva had spent years chewing the tips of her own hair and picking up strands from the carpet to eat. She became so poorly that she couldn't even drink a glass of water without being sick. When she finally sought help from medics, she was rushed to surgery where doctors found the giant mound of hair blocking her digestive system.
Ayperi was badly dehydrated and malnourished and doctors say she would have died without surgery.
Despite searching through 50 years of medical records, doctors have been unable to find evidence of such a large hairball, reports The Daily Mail.
The hospital's senior professor of surgery, Bahadir Bebezov, said: 'By the time we got her, she couldn't even drink water. We realised we needed to operate immediately.
'It was actually the only alternative, nothing else would solve the problem.
'In fact, her stomach was so badly swollen from hair and bits of wool from the carpet that it literally just oozed out soon as the wall of the stomach was cut.'
