Macy's, Bloomingdales Offering Same-Day Delivery
The same-day service will be offered this fall in Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Jose, Houston, Seattle, D.C. and Northern New Jersey. New York is not included in the launch of the home delivery service.
The service will be an option at checkout for those who shop online or through the retailers' mobile apps. The charge has not been announced.
A company called Deliv will provide the service. It already works with Foot Locker, the mall operator Westfield Group and General Growth Properties. The instant gratification trend is leading to more jobs at such home delivery companies.
Monday's announcement from Macy's and Bloomingdale's means shoppers on the retailers' Web sites or Web-enabled mobile apps will see a same-day delivery option when they check out.
The pricing has not yet been announced, but it will be "very market competitive," Daphne Carmeli, founder and CEO of Deliv, told the Chicago Tribune.
Companies like Amazon are raising customer expectations for same-day delivery. Google has also partnered on same-day delivery for Barnes & Noble, Costco and Staples.
Macy's is also on a hiring spree.
"Macy's and Bloomingdale's remain committed to operating at the forefront of innovation, as well as fostering a locally relevant shopping experience in every store, said Terry J. Lundgren, Macy's Inc. chairman and CEO in a statement announcing the program. "We will continue to test, to learn, and to proceed aggressively with new ideas that excite our customers and that make shopping more convenient and fun."
Separately, the department stores are allowing anyone nationwide to buy online and pick up the merchandise in stores.
