September 11, 2001 is a date that will forever be burned into the collective American psyche. Everyone who was old enough to remember the day can recall exactly where they were and what they were doing when they found out our nation had been attacked on U.S. soil.

Almost 3,000 people were killed in the series of coordinated attacks launched by the Islamic terrorist group al-Qaeda. According to the New York Times, al-Qaeda spent roughly half a million dollars to send 19 terrorists on suicide missions, hijacking four airplanes and ultimately costing the United States over $3.3 trillion. To date, the tragedy is considered the deadliest incident for firefighters and for law enforcement officers in the history of the U.S.

As America marks 13 years since the terrorist attacks, we decided to take a look back at the developments leading up to the hijackings with a minute-by-minute timeline of events on the day of 9/11, and the actions that took place in the weeks following.
