HIGH POINT, N.C. - A dog in High Point, North Carolina, has taken his duties of being "man's best friend" to a whole new level.

Ron Weatherford credits his 15-year-old beagle mix, Hendrix, with saving his life.

Weatherford says he suffered a heart attack early Friday morning at his home.

"What woke me up was Hendrix was licking me in the face," he said. "So when he started licking me, I came downstairs and called 911. But if Hendrix hadn't licked me in the face, I don't think I would've woken up."

Weatherford says he adopted Hendrix 15 years ago from the Guilford County Animal Shelter. Though, at first, Hendrix may have been the rescue - Weatherford says, now, he is.

"The thing about dogs is they are loyal to you," he said. "They give love back to you."

If the name Ron Weatherford sounds familiar, it's because he's currently running for the North Carolina House. He says he'll be back on the campaign trail after he takes a few days of rest, per the doctor's orders.
