Typo on Sonic sign leads to big donation ... and a lot of corn dogs

BURLINGTON, N.C. – A mistake on the part of a fast food restaurant has turned into a miracle for a non-profit that feeds the homeless.

On Thursday, Sonic restaurants nationwide had a deal where they sold corn dogs for 50 cents each. But at one Burlington Sonic, instead of advertising 50 cent corn dogs, they advertised ".50 cent" corn dogs, meaning each corn dog would cost half a penny.

One man decided to cash in on the deal, ordering 2,000 corn dogs to donate to Allied Churches of Alamance County.

The manager of the South Church Street Sonic says the sign was clearly a mistake on the part of the business, but they decided to honor the man's order anyway.

The manager of the South Church Street Sonic, Chris Lyle, says they did not have 2,000 corn dogs on hand, so instead will donate next week. Sonic Corporate tells us, in total, Allied Churches will get 960 corn dogs.

Allied Churches' staff says they are thrilled that this man, who wants to remain anonymous, thought of them.

"We are feeding a lot of people every single day," said Sara Beth Puckett, a development associate for Allied Churches. "We're serving 300 meals a day. So we're always in need of food. Always."

Lyle says he will and his employees will be more careful with their decimals next time. But he's glad that the South Church Street Sonic, which is locally-owned, is able to help those in need.

"Hopefully it's a positive for everybody and we can help," Lyle said. "And make it a win-win situation for everybody involved."
