Students at Suny Plattsburgh just finished their first week of study for the fall semester. To alert drivers that the school is back in session, the university put up a sign. It seemed like a pretty good idea ... but the sign had one major flaw: The word college was spelled incorrectly.

Though it's embarrassing, students are using the typo as a lesson. "This has taught me how to think on my feet. One of our professors talked with us an hour ago and was like, 'what would you do in this situation?," a PR student said.

Colleen Lamsa, Suny asst. Professor of Public Relations explained to WPTZ, " a contractor in Albany spelled the sign wrong, OK -- it would not be such a big deal of it were not the word 'college' on a college campus on opening weekend. But the key is how do we prevent that and how can we event that and how can students learn from it?"

"We're going to test everybody and see what they would do, what they would have done differently or what they would have done the same," said senior public relations major Adam Zakrzewski.

"We ended up putting on Twitter -- collage -- and how Plattsburgh was the museum without walls. We're able to kind of show the other assets that the school has by making light of the situation," said Lewis.

Although not ideal, Lemza hopes her students treat the experience like "on-the-job training."

"We're constantly doing things like that, so we can teach the students – 'This is real life. What are you going to do about it?' That's where the learning comes from and I think that's what makes our program so fun," said Lemza.

"Now that I'm learning how to do it, I think it could be fun and it could be interesting to do this in real life more often," said Lewis.
