Phil Robertson: 'I'm as much of a homophobe as Jesus'

Phil Robertson, the controversial patriarch on 'Duck Dynasty,' addressed the infamous anti-gay comments that got him banned from the show.

In GQ's January issue, a writer asked him what he considered "sinful." The reality star named homosexuality first. Now, he tells 'Good Morning America,' "The only place I know where I could've gone to answer that question would be a Bible. The dictionary wouldn't have explained it. I'm as much of a homophobe as Jesus was. People who are participating in homosexual behavior, they need to know I love 'em."

Robertson says he doesn't "hate anybody."

After the comments to GQ, A&E suspended him from the hit show about his family. It was a ban lifted just a few weeks later, and filming on the show resumed in spring.

By summer, the one-time powerhouse show had taken a sharp duck dive in the ratings. Many blamed Robertson's comments, at least in part.

Robertson has largely stayed out of the fray. He doesn't own a cell phone, thinks social media is dangerously addictive and has never turned on a computer.

But now, the 68-year-old duck hunter says he hopes his new book, 'Unphiltered,' will help explain his true stance on controversial topics. Robertson himself is as controversial as the issues he discusses.

Tuesday morning Tweeters watching the interview called him everything from a "bigot" to a "great man."
