A behind-the-scenes look at Prince George's first year

He's already been dubbed "His Royal Cuteness" and "Gorgeous George," but for most royal watchers, Prince George, or rather, "His Royal Highness Prince George Alexander Louis of Cambridge," is largely a mystery. Now, as he prepares to celebrate his first birthday on July 22nd, Vanity Fair is revealing a behind-the-scenes look back at the youngster's first year, and the sometimes rocky – and colicky- road for parents William and Kate.
Contributor Kate Nicholl uncovered that while the little Royal's few public appearances seemed to go off without a hitch, the early days were anything but easy on the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, who initially didn't want to hire a nanny.
Writes Nicholl, "The early weeks however, were testing. George was a hungry baby who cried often... After much thought and deliberation, they agreed they needed some help."
Help initially came in the form of 71-year-old Jessie Webb, William's own former nanny, who came out of retirement to offer help until they found a more permanent solution.
The couple was reluctant to use an agency, and Spanish-born Maria Teresa Turrion Borallo was recommended by a friend. With 20 years of child care under her belt and professional training at an exclusive institution, her credentials include experience in self-defense, high-speed driving, and dealing with paparazzi.
Even with the extra help, the new parents' demonstrated a commitment to spending as much time with the young Prince as possible, and despite a hectic calendar, wanted to make sure "very few evening engagements were scheduled, so that William and Kate could be home for George's bath and bedtime."
The report, which chronicles the-behind-the-scenes efforts to control the baby's exposure to photographers, (pictures of the prince remain in high demand) describes George as "a perfect combination of his mother and father... Kate's dark eyes and distinguished eyebrows and William's nose and smile." And while George is now on to solid foods, the article reveals that one of his go-to baby food staples were a Greek-style yoghurt with kale, strawberries and amaranth.
As for speculation about when Prince George will have a sibling, Nicholl reports that there are rumors among the couple's friends that they plan to try this summer.
The August issue of Vanity Fair will be available in New York and Los Angeles in print and digitally on July 10. The magazine will be on national newsstands and available in an audio edition July 15.
