'Ghosts' spotted on Alcatraz Island

Also known as The Rock, was a maximum security prison located on Alcatraz Island in the San Francisco Bay. Now a tourist attraction, the prison operated from 1934 to 1963 and housed some of America's most notorious criminals, such as Al Capone.

Considered to be one of the most haunted places in America, some claim that you can feel the presence of past inmates still lurking in the empty cells and hallways.

Recently, a British couple visiting the rock snapped a picture of an apparently empty visitation block window. But after looking at the photo, they discovered what seems to be a woman from a past time staring back at them.

Reports of strange sounds and sightings at Alcatraz have been described by many former inmates, prison guards and visitors.

Tourists have explained hearing moans, whispering, screams, and even clanging throughout the cell blocks. Some have even caught their own unexplained apparitions and shadows on camera.

A ranger at the prison says that they've heard sounds of a banjo being played as they walk through the shower room. It is here that Al Capone was known to practice playing banjo.

The prison has also been the subject of numerous paranormal investigations, like the Syfy Channel's "Ghost Hunters". The team reported sounds of footsteps and even audible answers to questions that they asked.

From famous prisoners to ghostly legends, Alcatraz will always remain a paranormal attraction to many.
