Former porn star runs for Florida school board

A former pornstar,known as Dave Pounder, is pounding on doors to get the necessary votes to be elected onto a local school board.

38-year-old David Mech, who is better known for his adult film resume, is causing a bit of a controversy in Palm Beach County, Florida, where he is running for a seat on the school board. Since leaving porn, Mech, who has two doctorate degrees, has been running a math tutoring service and he believes he can make a difference to the community. He is running on a platform that improving technology, keeping religion out of the classroom, and reforming sex education.

It's his sex ed reform that may be the most radical. He says that if Palm Beach County residents don't believe that high school students should have access to free condoms to reduce teen pregnancy, then they shouldn't vote for him.

To his critics who bash Mech as a role model, he argues that his past makes him no worse than a teacher who smokes, or an educator who doesn't eat properly. In an interview with NBC Miami, he said, ""Look at my background. I'm completely non-violent. I have perfect credit. I own property. I pay taxes. I am a business owner. I employee people. I volunteer at the animal shelter. I've taught math at college. What more do you want than people trying to socially sanction me for lawful conduct that doesn't hurt anybody?"

At the same time as running for a seat on the school board, Mech is also suing the school for discrimination. The same school board ordered the removal of signs advertising Mech as a math tutor after they learned of his porn star past.

The Palm Beach County school board election is to be held August 26th.
