Mexican goalie 'Memo' is overnight sensation

Updated

It seems that overnight Mexico's world cup team goalie has gone from a virtual unknown to an internet superstar.

28-year-old Guillermo "Memo" Ochoa gave an amazing performance against Brazil in Mexico's second match of the tournament with a number of incredible saves. It's no surprise that he was instantly trending on Twitter. According to Twitter Reverb, there were nearly two million mentions of Ochoa during the Mexico/Brazil match.

Even after the game, the goalkeeper continued to keep the world's attention. One twitter compared Ochoa's ability to stop the ball midair to Neo from the Matrix. User @SupermanTweets photoshopped him to look like... well, Superman. But the greatest Memo meme has to the Gandalph-inspired, "You shall not pass."

More surprising than Ochoa's instant notoriety, the goalkeeper is a free agent as of July 1st, so he should expect to see offers flying in. But something tells me he'll be able to field them just fine.
