'Super bananas' may save millions of lives in Africa

London, UK - A new project pioneered by Australian researchers plans to have "special banana varieties -- enriched with alpha and beta carotene which the body converts to vitamin A -- growing in Uganda by 2020," according to AFP.

The project is part of a larger initiative to use "good science" to potentially save the lives of millions of "poor and subsistence-farming populations with nutritionally rewarding food."

Researchers announced Monday that the bananas are now being sent to the United States. According to multiple sources, the six-week trial "measuring how well they lift vitamin A levels in humans" should begin soon.
