One World Trade Center: Watch Two Guys BASE Jump Off Its Roof
Video of two men BASE jumping from the 1,776-foot, unfinished One World Trade Center in New York City was posted on YouTube yesterday. The BASE jump -- that'd be free falling from a fixed object using a parachute to break the fall (the acronym a stands for "building, antenna, span, and Earth") -- occurred on Sept. 30, 2013 at 3 a.m.
Also happening yesterday: four New York men were arrested in connection with the jump.
According to Newsday, Marko Markovich, 27, of Lake Ronkonkoma; Kyle Hartwell, 29, of East Patchogue; Andrew Rossig, 32, of Kings Park; and Andrew Rossig, 33, of Slate Hill "were charged with third-degree burglary, a Class D felony; second-degree reckless endangerment, a Class A misdemeanor; and jumping from a structure, also a Class A misdemeanor."
The tallest building in the Western Hemisphere, One World Trade Center's two-floor observatory is scheduled to open to travelers in 2015.
This stunt, of course, evokes memories of both the two Russians who climbed the unfinished Shanghai Tower a few months back and Philippe Petit who walked a high wire stretched between Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in 1974. After coming down, Petit was arrested, but the charges were later dropped in exchange for him performing for kids in Central Park. Hopefully the jumpers' punishment will be equally lenient.
