The Country That Drinks The Most...

They party hard down in...South Korea?

We'll admit we didn't see this coming - the country that apparently drinks more hard liquor than any other nation is South Korea. (Via TIME)

That's according to data from global marketing research firm Euromonitor International.

Quartz breaks it down - South Koreans drink an average of 13.7 shots a week. And nobody else can even compare - Russia was in second with 6.3 shots per week.

Also in the top five were Thailand, Poland and Japan.

And The Daily Mail gives some insight - "South Korea's unparalleled liquor consumption is almost entirely down to the country's love for the fermented rice spirit Soju."

Drinking Soju is seen as a way of building friendship, especially after a long day's work in a country that works some of the longest hours in the world.

Although Gawker points out that Soju's alcohol content is only 20 percent, while vodka's is 40. So South Korea might be drinking more liquid, but Russians are getting more bang for their buck.

As for the United States - 10th place, with 3.3 shots per week.
