Donna Karan started her career as an assistant designer with Anne Klein in the late 1960s, where she was eventually promoted to associate designer in 1971 after Klein passed away from cancer. The new mom (and 25-year-old) Karen launched the collection to critical acclaim and remained head of design for the brand for almost 10 years. One day, Karan approached the company looking to create her own line for her friends. She was immediately fired. A day later, the company rehired her and allowed her to start Donna Karan.
