Postal Worker Fired For Throwing Out Mail Related To Obamacare
As was reported by local Fox outlet KMPH-26, the mail carrier threw out mail that was related to the Affordable Care Act, popularly known as "Obamacare." The carrier, who has not been named in reports, was caught by local resident Jerry Dills, who said he noticed the worker tossing the material from his apartment at the Central Fresno apartment complex. And so far no motive for the move, political or otherwise, has been mentioned in reports. USPS employees, of course, are welcome to take advantage of the service's benefits package.
Dills, for his part, claimed he saw the postal worker tossing the Obamacare materials into the complex's dumpster, which he then took pictures of, as can be seen above. Dills then proceeded to report the incident to his local post office. The worker was promptly fired after he was questioned by the USPS.
According to Dills, it was clear that something was up. "He just kept glancing over his shoulder over and over again. It was like he knew what he was doing was wrong," he told KMPH.
Initially, the worker claimed he "was running late and wanted to get back to the post office on time." But the story was not enough to make the USPS happy; the worker was fired on the spot. As it turns out, the worker was a temp employee who was hired back in August.
The Obamacare mystique
The failure to provide Americans with information about Obamacare couldn't come at a more pressing time. Three out of four Americans were unaware the legislation's health exchanges opened this month, as was reported by msnbc.com. Indeed, half of those participating in a recent poll conducted by the Kaiser Family Foundation said they needed more information about the law to know how it was going to affect them and their families.
And in spite of the hoopla surrounding Obamacare, the legislation is likely to have little to no impact on most Americans' health plans, as non-partisan experts have told AOL Jobs. Indeed, a separate study from Kaiser found that 95 percent of employers with at least 50 workers already offer health benefits. And so workers at these outfits will likely see "fairly small, if any" changes, as Chris Ryan, a frequent commentator on the health care law and a vice president for ADP, the payroll and benefits firm, previously told AOL Jobs.
Commentators like Ryan, however, do maintain, it remains to be seen how companies will adjust once they start complying in full with the law. And reports have already emerged of employers cutting both workers and their hours as a result of Obamacare.
Of course, it's still not clear whether this worker had a political agenda in trashing the mail. But the worker could face federal charges for the move. The USPS is still investigating whether more materials were discarded.
