Playgrounds being built this fall among more than 50 playgrounds Humana and KaBOOM! are building over four-year period
LOUISVILLE, Ky.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Humana Inc. (NYS: HUM) , one of the nation's leading health and well-being companies, and non-profit KaBOOM! today launched their second annual fall playground tour in which they will build nine playgrounds in nine cities over the next nine weeks. The first build will take place this Saturday on Sept. 22 in Portland, Ore.
"We are proud of the success that we've had with our KaBOOM! partnership," said Thomas J. Liston, President, Retail Segment for Humana. "These playgrounds allow us to enrich the lives of communities that we serve and promote healthy living in people of all ages."
The playgrounds built by Humana and KaBOOM! feature traditional kid-friendly equipment alongside adult/senior stretch stations and walking paths to create a space for all ages to play and gather for family picnics, reunions and other activities.
"My family and I have continued to use this playground week after week since it was built last fall," said Dorothy Jackson, 73, of Midway, Fla., who frequents a playground Humana and KaBOOM! built last fall in Orlando, Fla. "The equipment has given me a reason to stay active and a safe place to play with my grandchildren—I love it!"
In addition to Portland, playgrounds will be built in Milwaukee, Wis.; Cleveland, Ohio; Des Moines, Iowa; South Charleston, W.Va.; Springfield, Mo.; Huntsville, Ala.; Baton Rouge, La., and Phoenix, Ariz. from Sept. 22 through Nov. 17.
"This partnership with Humana has been critical in bringing much-needed play spaces and equipment to cities and towns across the country," said Darell Hammond, Founder and CEO of KaBOOM!. "These playgrounds not only provide an area for families to come together and engage in physical activity, but also allow for increased community interactions that span generations as we seek to achieve our vision of a great place to play within walking distance for every child in America."
Based in part on the success of their 2011 campaign—building eight playgrounds in eight cities in eight weeks—Humana and The Humana Foundation recently entered into a three-year alliance with KaBOOM!, running from 2012 through 2014. As part of the alliance, Humana, The Humana Foundation and KaBOOM! are now teaming up to build more than 50 playgrounds across the U.S. over a four-year time frame.
Additionally, the Humana Foundation is also sponsoring the KaBOOM! Playful City USA initiative, a program honoring cities and towns that make play a priority and use innovative approaches to get children active, playing, and healthy.

KaBOOM! is the national non-profit dedicated to saving play. Children today spend less time playing outdoors than any previous generation, a fact that is having disastrous consequences on their health, achievement levels, and overall well-being. To fight this play deficit, social entrepreneur Darell Hammond founded non-profit KaBOOM! in 1996 in Washington, D.C. with a vision of creating a great place to play within walking distance of every child in America. Since then, KaBOOM! has mapped over 90,000 places to play, built more than 2,100 playgrounds, and successfully advocated for play policies in hundreds of cities across the country. KaBOOM! also provides communities with online tools to self-organize and take action to support play on both a local and national level. Hammond chronicles the founding of the organization and the importance of the cause of play in his TheNew York Times Best Seller KaBOOM!: A Movement to Save Play, now out in paperback. The book details how businesses and communities can work together to save play for children across the country. All author proceeds support KaBOOM!. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., KaBOOM! also has offices in Chicago and San Mateo, Calif. For more information, visit www.kaboom.org.
