CONSOL Energy Misses Where It Counts

For the quarter ended June 30 (Q2), CONSOL Energy beat expectations on revenues and missed estimates on earnings per share.
Compared to the prior-year quarter, revenue dropped and GAAP earnings per share expanded significantly.

EPS came in at $0.31. The 23 earnings estimates compiled by S&P Capital IQ forecast $0.33 per share. GAAP EPS of $0.67 for Q2 were 97% higher than the prior-year quarter's $0.34 per share.

For the quarter, gross margin was 37.1%, 130 basis points better than the prior-year quarter. Operating margin was 18.4%, 850 basis points better than the prior-year quarter. Net margin was 10.5%, 550 basis points better than the prior-year quarter.
Next quarter's average estimate for revenue is $1.36 billion. On the bottom line, the average EPS estimate is $0.44.
Next year's average estimate for revenue is $5.49 billion. The average EPS estimate is $1.69.
The stock has a three-star rating (out of five) at Motley Fool CAPS, with 640 members out of 687 rating the stock outperform, and 47 members rating it underperform.
