House of the Day: Chateau Is Sight to Behold
We've shown you colorful homes. We've shown you quirky homes. This one ... well, let's just say this one takes all that to another level.
This newly-listed, $1.1 million chateau in Ledyard, N.Y., is the estate of artists Victoria and Richard MacKenzie-Childs, best known for their eponymous furniture, ceramics and jewelry line. Their seven-bedroom mansion is reflective of their "whimsical and enchanting designs," Realtor reports. We think it's straight out of "Alice in Wonderland" or the 1970s version of "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory," or both. From its wild dining room decked out floor-to-ceiling in checkers and florals, to its candy-colored bedrooms (note the flower vases "growing" from the bedposts), to the, um, dolls hanging on strings from the bathroom ceiling... let's just say we've never seen anything like it before. Check out the pictures below.
Colors, crazy patterns and hanging dolls aside, the 4,280-square-foot main house features stunning views over Cayuga Lake and three wood-burning fireplaces. Plus, if you ever get sick of staring at the quirky decor, the estate is set upon a whopping 43.28 acres so that you can slip out and soak up serene woodlands, fields and lakes. Thankfully.
Michael DeRosa of Sotheby's has the listing.
