House of the Day: Studly Horse Ranch in Wild Wyoming
One of the country's most promiscuous stallions now has more to brag about than just the sheer volume of his conquests. He's residing at a ranch that listed last week for a whopping $175 million. The sprawling Jackson Land and Cattle Ranch in Wyoming is home to a renowned equestrian center in Jackson Hole and boasts the presence of Peptoboonsmal, a legend in the sport of cutting whose offspring have won over $16 million in competition.
The logic-defying price tag of this ranch, located just three minutes from downtown Jackson Hole, is in no way a result of the quality of the estate's actual home. In the way of dwellings, the property offers relative modesty: a simple three-bedroom and a four-bedroom guesthouse for ranch staff. The real reason for the price is the 52-stall equestrian center and the 1,750 acres of rolling pine-blanketed hills at the facility's disposal.
The acreage provides ample room for cattle grazing and cutting, the sport of separating a lone cattle from its herd by horseback. The estate also serves as the stamping grounds for a stallion of near-unrivaled potency. In the 2008 breeding season alone, the stud known as Peptoboonsmal bred with 167 mares.
Also factoring into the mammoth asking price is the estate's potential for development. While Adam York of Sublime Public Relations, who is helping handle marketing for the property, says the seller would prefer a buyer keen on conservation, the estate is advertised as containing 35 approved building sites. That could potentially give a buyer "the option to build 35 ridiculous mansions," York said.
John Pierce of Hall & Hall Partners has the listing.
