Huge Fire at Miami International Airport Disrupts Flights
Firefighters brought a huge fire at Miami International Airport under control early this morning, but travelers were being advised the blaze would disrupt flight schedules.
The fire broke out late last night in an area of the airport where fuel is kept, and flames could be seen shooting into the air and smoke billowing, the Miami Herald reports.
More than 30 Miami-Dade fire crews responded. No one was injured in the blaze.
One fuel tank was damaged and the airport's five others were also impacted, officials said. The fire occurred in a remote area of the airport, not near runway or terminal areas
But travelers will feel an impact.
Airport spokesman Greg Chin said the fire had reduced the airport's fuel supply to 40%. And there were reports of flight delays and cancellations.
Passengers are being urged to check flight times with their airlines.
Airport officials were trying to figure out a workaround including possibly using tanker trucks to get operations back to normal. Inspectors were trying to determine the cause of the fire.
