A Virginia family is furious after their wheelchair-confined grandmother was given a boarding pass in the name of another passenger and mistakenly helped aboard the wrong Delta flight -- a snafu that apparently went unnoticed by the airline and airport security.

The woman, 80-year-old Nefissa Yesuf, was supposed to fly from Atlanta to Dulles International Airport on Sunday afternoon. Instead, she ended up at the airport in Charlotte with no family member to greet her, CNN is reporting.

"We got a phone call at 4:30 from the airport saying, 'Your grandmother was in baggage claim. Where are you guys?' " Melika Adem, Yesuf's granddaughter, told a CNN affiliate WUSA 9."She was crying."

Adem was reunited with her grandmother on Sunday night. Yesuf, who is from Ethiopia, doesn't speak English.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) said it is investigating. "We screen two million passengers a day. Every single one of them goes through appropriate physical screening and multiple other levels of security,'' TSA spokesman Nicholas Kimball told AOL Travel News. "We're looking into this situation."

A Delta Air Lines spokesperson said the carrier is cooperating with the TSA investigation and has "reached out to the customer and her family with an apology and an offer of compensation. We'll continue to be in touch with the customer and her family while we investigate."

Delta Airlines was just hit with a $2 million fine by the Transportation Department for its treatment of disabled passengers - the largest fine ever imposed a carrier for non-safety violations. Among the areas the carrier was cited for was leaving wheelchair passengers unattended.
