Black & Decker, Haier freezers recalled after some catch fire
So far no one has been hurt, but 18 incidents have been reported, including four fires that caused minor wall and smoke damage as well as spoiled food.
The Black & Decker model BFE53 and the Haier model ESNCM053E, 5.3-cubic-foot capacity, white chest freezers are the units being recalled. Each freezer either has Black & Decker printed on its front upper-right corner or Haier on its front upper-left corner. All of the freezers have a rating label on the top center of their backs that includes the name brand, model number and unit's serial number.
Only model BFE53 and model ESNCM053E freezers with serial numbers that begin with these numbers are included in the recall -- 1001, 1002, 1003, 1004, 1005, 1006 and 1007.
The Black & Decker model was sold at Walmart stores nationwide from January 2010 through September 2010 for about $150. The Haier model was sold through Amazon.com and other retailers from May 2010 through October 2010 for between $220 and $290. The freezers were made in China.
The CPSC said any consumer who has a recalled freezer should unplug the unit and contact the company to set up an appointment for a free repair. Call the company at (877) 878-7579 between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. Eastern, Monday through Friday; 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Eastern on Saturdays; or 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern on Sundays. Consumers also can register at the company's website.
This is the third appliance recall within the last two weeks over a fire risk. Electrolux and Frigidaire brand smoothtop electric cooktops and ranges were recalled and just last week GE recalled 174,000 of its high-end Profile and Monogram dishwashers.
