A city rich in history and bubbling with southern charm, Charleston is guaranteed to steal away your heart, but not necessarily your wallet. In fact, if you stick with the local hangouts, you'll find that Chucktown can be quite affordable. So how do the locals pinch those pretty pennies? Two words: Happy Hour. In Charleston, the most cost effective time to go out for drinks is usually from five to eight. Start your evening at happy hour, and you might even have a few cents to spare at the end of the night.

Here are a few spots that boast a happy hour menu Charleston natives find hard to resist:

The 360-degree view is incredible at this casual spot, where locals come to wind down. Sip one of a variety of Charleston cocktails as you watch the sunset over the city's skyline and the harbor. Happy hour here is from 5PM-7PM and includes signature libations like $4 margaritas, $4 Firefly Sweet Tea Vodka, $2 domestics, $3 imports and $3 well drinks, as well as the always-changing $5 Daily Specialty Drink.

If you need a snack, you can't go wrong with Vendue's appetizers. Options include the chicken, corn and black bean egg rolls or the nachos piled high with pepper jack, tomatoes and more. Patrons enjoy live music every night except for Tuesday when Vendue hosts Trivia from 6PM-9PM.

Blind Tiger Pub
A longtime Charleston favorite, this building's reputation as a "parlor of consumption" is 200+ years running. This long history has resulted in quite the local following. On a typical night, live jazz floats into a huge courtyard laced with brickwork and archways dating back to the 1800s. Lights are strung about the garden, creating an environment where the hours seem to slip away. The food is not wanton here – the pierogi are thoughtfully wrapped in bacon and onion, and the hamburgers are cooked just right and served with pommes frites. These dishes, among others, are half-price every Tuesday after 5PM, all part of an attractive happy hour menu. Charleston locals appreciate $3.50 wells, $3 drafts, $2.25 domestics and $2.50 Yuengling, 5PM–8PM. In addition, Newcastle is $2.50 and PBR is $2, all day every day.

Southend Brewery & Smokehouse
A large, triangle-shaped red brick building on the bay houses huge fermentation tanks in neat rows along its walls. This working brewery has a warehouse feel, and its open spaces, dark woods and warm decor make it great spot for dinner or happy hour. While in Charleston, you'll want to take in as many harbor views as possible, so ride the brewery's glass elevator to the third floor and park it at the Harborview Bar. Choose any of their seven microbrews, from a full-bodied stout to smooth and light blonde. During happy hour (4PM-7PM) these gems are only $2 a pint. After picking your poison, entertain yourself by playing pool or darts.

Moe's Crosstown Tavern
A small neighborhood hole in the wall, Moe's is well known for bar food with high standards. Monday to Friday from 4PM until 7PM, they have half-price wings and $1 off draughts and well liquors. Everyday specials include $2 Red Stripe, $2.50 Bourbon and $5 Jägerbombs or Monsterbombs – Charleston cocktails that promise to get you going. On Tuesdays from 7PM to 10PM burgers are half price – our personal favorite is the melted goat cheese and roasted poblano. You can expect the staff to be friendly and jovial whether it's your first or 50th visit.

Gene's Haufbrau

The oldest bar in Charleston is not quite as old as you might think. Established in 1952, Gene's is loved by its regulars. Boasting the largest beer selection in Charleston, with over 150 from which to choose, this joint truly gives a connoisseur something to party about. From 4PM–8PM you can enjoy $1 High Life and PBR, $3 house liquor and $1.75 domestics. Enjoy a bowl of warm artichoke dip or a corn dog with your favorites from the happy hour menu. Charleston patrons can then challenge friends to a game of Connect Four.

A.C.'s Bar
Notorious for its unfriendly staff and proud of it, A.C.'s is a hipster bar that plays a lot of punk and metal. Expect to fight for pool tables, and don't plan on a fancy bathroom experience. In spite of these somewhat unpleasant traits, everyone loves A.C.'s. Most people play nice, and a heightened sense of congeniality is especially noticeable around happy hour. In this Charleston bar, the beer of the month (always top picks) is $2.25, house liquor is $3, call liquor is $4, domestics $2, premium domestics $2.25, drafts $1.75 and draft imports $3.25, from 4PM until 7PM daily.

Velvet paintings line the walls of this groovy tiki bar in Avondale where locals come to see and be seen in VooDoo's warm red lighting and cozy atmosphere. Your night simply isn't complete without ordering some wacky tacos like BBQ Duck Confit or Bacon Cheeseburger, all half price during happy hour (4PM–7PM). Voodoo also offers Charleston cocktails at a steal, including $3 Mai Tais and $4 well drinks. Beer-drinkers can enjoy $1.50 High Life and PBR and $2 domestics, while wine drinkers keep up with $4 house wine and Spanish Cava.

Henry's House
The last on our list of top places to find Charleston cocktails is Henry's House. Here, black and white tiles cover the floor and oversized leather chairs offer a comfortable, dare we say "manly," place to sit back and take it all in. The red brick walls, portraits of deceased musicians, picturesque round bar and glorious wood are reminiscent of an old smoking room. Upstairs is more of the same, with wood floors and red woven carpets. The spacious rooftop feels like a close friend's patio with comfortable furniture, candles and lots of intimate spaces – perfect for conversation. Happy hour runs from 5PM to 8PM and includes $1.50 domestics, $2.50 house liquor, $2 off specialty cocktails and $4 Hornitos Margaritas.
