Carnival Cruise Ship Room Steward Arrested on Child Porn Charges

A crew member on the Carnival Glory cruise ship has been arrested in Canada and charged with smuggling child pornography into the country.

Nyoman Putra, 26, of Indonesia, an assistant room steward on the Carnival Glory, was taken into custody by Canadian Borders Services Agency officers at the pier in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

He allegedly had child pornography on his laptop computer.

The ship had called at Halifax on a 5-night Canada/New England cruise from New York .

Putra was arraigned in provincial court on a Customs Act charge, and was being held in a Nova Scotia correctional facility.

Halifax Regional Police may add additional charges, according to The Chronicle Herald newspaper.

A spokesman for Carnival Cruise Lines confirmed the arrest and says the line "fully cooperated with authorities."

This is the second such ship arrest this year in Halifax. In May, a Filipino man who worked as an assistant waiter on the Italian cruise ship Costa Atlantica was sentenced to four months in jail for possession and importation of child pornography.
