Friday Freebies: free coffee, diabetes meter, bagels, and more!
It pays to hit the books. Amazon is offering free Prime memberships, which cost $79 per year, to college students taking at least one class. The main benefit of Amazon Prime is free two-day shipping. I'm guessing this is a not-so-subtle way for Amazon to encourage students to order textbooks through them. There is no minimum order to get the free fast shipping and you can upgrade to one-day shipping for $4 an item. It looks like grad students are eligible too. To get this deal, you must have a valid .edu e-mail address, which they check by sending a message to the address. You will also need to share the state in which you attend school, your level of study, and your major. It's OK if your .edu e-mail is not the same as the one associated with your existing Amazon account (if you have one).

It's one thing to shop thrift stores, but it's another entirely to find once-touched designer threads for a fraction of the original cost. With my insider tips, you'll score the best deals on vintage. Watch this video to make the most of thrift stores.
A day after Barnes & Noble offered free coffee to anyone who downloaded the book chain's iPhone app and an ebook, Borders is countering with its own offer for free coffee when you download its app to your iPad, iPhone, Blackberry, Droid or laptop. No ebook download is required to get the free coffee at Borders. One free small coffee per customer. To get the freebie pull up the app to show to the Borders barista. Unclear when this deal ends although the coupon says for a "limited time only." Do you know the expiration date for this coupon? Caveats: not valid at regular Seattle's Best coffee shops. May not be combined with any other offer or discount. Tattoo your child with important info so he or she will never get lost. Brilliant -- because the free tattoos are temporary. You can paste 'em onto your kid the morning of the county fair, before a school field trip to the big city or on the eve of another event where your child may get lost. The freebie is courtesy of Protection One, a security company that claims the free tattoos will make your kids think "you rock." Um, yeah. If the tattoos looked less like a "Hello My Name Is" sticker, that might be true. On the other hand, the fake tattoo gimmick is bizarre enough it may just work. Get the freebie by sharing your name, address, email, and phone number. The form also asks two quick questions and lets you opt to receive sales brochures.
Here's an almost-freebie that is worth mentioning. Kids 10 years old or younger eat free at Carrow's the rest of the summer after 4 p.m. You get one free kids meal with every adult entree you order through August, 31, 2010. The freebie deal came up on the first of five promotions when I last clicked on the Carrow's website, so if you don't see it immediately give it a half minute. Join Carrow's loyalty program to get the deal. Caveats: one coupon per check. Valid at participating locations only. Cannot be combined with any other discounts or coupons. Not valid on banquet orders.
