Nassau Straw Market Burns Down
The Nassau Guardian is reporting one of two, one-story structures at the Cable Beach Market was completely destroyed in a fire over the weekend. Police believe an arsonist may have started the blaze, and are investigating, the newspaper says.
The market building, located near the Wyndham Nassau & Crystal Palace Casino on Cable Beach, housed about 40 stalls. The fire puts as many as 70 people out of work, and vendors are also reporting losses of goods including T-shirts, jewelry, handbags and straw products.
"It's a disaster, a devastating blow to us," Sheniqua Johnson, one of the souvenir vendors, told the newspaper.
Making the situation worse, the Bay Street Market was never actually replaced. Vendors there have been working out of a makeshift tent since that September 2001 fire, which also destroyed nearby buildings.
