SpongeBob and Dora Coming to Marriott
Marriott will soon announce a family vacation promotion with Nickelodeon. The hotel company is hoping to draw families with kids to more than 2,000 Marriott hotels this summer by featuring popular Nick TV characters like SpongeBob SquarePants and Dora the Explorer.
While details are still under wraps, a Marriott spokeswoman said the promotion will begin on July 1, and run through the end of the year, and will be available for booking on June 18. She said it will be available at Marriott, JW Marriott, SpringHill Suites, Fairfield Inn, Residence Inn, Courtyard and TownePlace Suites properties in the U.S. and Canada.
The hotel firm already serves up the popular Nick characters with two-night Nickelodeon-themed weekend packages at several Marriott resort properties including the Harbor Beach Marriott in Fort Lauderdale, and the JW Marriott Desert Ridge in Phoenix. Packages include a character breakfast with Dora and SpongeBob and a live show with a chance to get slimed.
In addition, a few years ago Marriott announced a plan to develop themed resorts with the popular children's cable TV network.
Increasing its presence in the travel realm, Nickelodeon also inked a big deal earlier this year with Norwegian Cruise Line. Nick-themed cruises have been announced for February 20, 2011, on the Norwegian Jewel cruising to the Bahamas from New York; and on July 24, 2011, on Norwegian Epic, cruising to ports in Italy and Spain from Barcelona. The cruises promise total Nick immersion with character breakfasts, meet-and-greets, show screenings and participatory game shows.
As part of the three-year agreement between Nick and the cruise line, the Jewel also last month began offering onboard appearances by Nick characters and Nick-themed activities. A similar program will debut on the soon-to-launch Epic in July.
