German "Love Boat" the Deutschland Catches Fire

A boat known in Germany as the "Love Boat," because of its role in a German TV show, caught fire over the weekend in western Norway. The Associated Press reports all 607 onboard the Deutschland were evacuated, and there were no reports of injuries.

The fire reportedly started in the engine room and was contained to that area. The 364 stranded passengers were housed in hotels, and booked to fly back to Hamburg, where the cruise of the Norwegian fjords had originated. The ship was being towed to Bergen for inspection, according to trade publication Seatrade Insider.

Peter Dielmann Cruises, which operates the ship, canceled the next voyage, which had been scheduled for May 25. The cruise company recently stopped its big river cruise operation in Germany, citing financial difficulties, but vowed at the time to continue to operate ocean voyages.

The Deutschland was built in 1998, and draws a predominately German crowd.
