Art, music, theater: 15 things to do in the Wilmington area for Super Bowl weekend

It's Super Bowl weekend, so by the time Sunday evening rolls around, chances are you'll be tuned in to the big game just like everyone else in America.

Right up until kickoff, however, Wilmington's got you covered with a variety of fun cultural events.

Two new play comedies open at Thalian Hall, and the Cameron Art Museum opens its latest exhibition.

Some excellent Wilmington bands have shows lined up, roots music rolls into town, Bourgie Nights is hosting burlesque AND cabaret, and there's even a bagpipe concert.

Details on all of these and more below.

ALL WEEKEND

'Stay In the Light: Works by Charles Edwards Williams'

At the Cameron Art Museum: New exhibit at Wilmington's premier art museum features the work of South Carolina-born, Durham-based artist Charles Edward Williams. Williams, who teaches at North Carolina Central University, has shown his work at galleries in Alabama, Louisiana, Cincinnati, Switzerland and elsewhere, and has been written up by such esteemed publications as The Washington Post.

At the CAM, the paintings and installations of "Stay in the Light" were inspired by photographs taken during the Civil Rights movement and, according to the museum, are meant to offer "a contemporary response to social and political issues of the past and present." The exhibit includes new work as well as past work from Williams’ series "Sun and Light." Opening reception for the exhibit, which features live gospel and blues from Ian Daviz, is 6-9 p.m. Feb. 8; $15, free for members. Exhibit opens to the public Feb. 9 and hangs through May 26.

'Steel Magnolias'

Feb. 9-18 at Thalian Hall: Thalian Association Community Theatre presents Robert Harling's beloved play about the denizens of a small-town Southern beauty parlor. Packed with laughs and culminating in tears, Emily Graham directs a cast that includes past Wilmington Theater Awards Best Actress in a Play winner Michelle Gagliano (as the cantankerous Ousier) and current Best Actress in a Play nominee Elizabeth Michaels (as the matron M'Lynn). Unlike the movie, which expands on the play and adds characters, the play is set entirely in Truvy's beauty salon, with Truvy played by Wilmington stage vet Alisa Harris. 7:30 p.m. Feb. 9-10 and 16-17, 2 p.m. Feb. 11 and 18. 910-632-2285.
