Army identifies suspect in Vanessa Guillen’s disappearance, who committed suicide before arrest

Fort Hood authorities say that they have identified a suspect in the disappearance of Pfc. Vanessa Guillen. However, the suspect committed suicide as officers moved to arrest him on Wednesday.

The late suspect is Spc. Aaron David Robinson, who authorities say fled Fort Hood on Tuesday night before he could be put into the custody of Army criminal investigators. Robinson was from Illinois and enlisted in the Army in 2017. Though co-workers, he and Guillen did not work in the same building and were not in the same line of command.

CID Senior Special Agent Damon Phelps said in a Thursday press conference that investigators were looking into Robinson’s interactions with Guillen. Despite the fact that Gullen’s family has said that Vanessa told them she was sexually harassed by an unidentified sergeant before her disappearance, Phelps said that there was “no credible information” to support this claim.

Guillen was last seen in a Fort Hood parking lot on the morning of April 22. Her keys, ID and wallet were all found where she had been working earlier in the day.

On Tuesday, hours before Robinson escaped Fort Hood, the remains of a still-unidentified body were found near the base, which many believe could belong to Guillen. The Army has said that they suspect foul play in her disappearance.

Additionally, Texas Rangers have arrested a civilian suspect in connection with Guillen’s case. Though her name has not been made public, authorities described her as the estranged wife of a former Fort Hood soldier.
