Gender reveal parties have quickly become a tradition amongst parents-to-be. Excited as most of us can be for happy couples finding out if they are having a boy or a girl, we will be the first to admit it's a whole lot cuter when the gender reveal involves adorable zoo animals.

Like the orangutans at the Little Rock Zoo in Arkansas who revealed what gender their latest addition is on Saturday.

The Little Rock Zoo posted on Facebook, "Exciting news - it’s a BOY! Our orangutan family just got a little bigger, and we're thrilled to announce that the newest addition is a healthy baby boy!"

Mama Berani and baby are both reported to be doing great and zoo staff are closely monitoring them.

Orangutans have a long period of infant dependency (weaning around age six or seven) so Berani will have to help care for her little boy for many years to come. Mothers teach their infants what food to eat, where to find that food, in which trees and during which seasons. Young orangutans must learn about hundreds of varieties of fruit, where to find them seasonally and how to open them. In the wild orangutans eat wild fruits like lychees, mangosteens, and figs.

More About Berani and Her Baby

The zoo shared on their website that in February 2024, the Little Rock Zoo celebrated a remarkable event in orangutan conservation with the arrival of a critically endangered orangutan, marking the second such birth at the Zoo. Berani, who previously gave birth to big sister Kasih in 2019, welcomed a baby boy into the world in the early morning hours of February 23, 2024.

The World Wildlife Fund explains that a century ago there were probably more than 230,000 orangutans in total, but the Bornean orangutan is now estimated at about 104,700 based on updated geographic range (Endangered) and the Sumatran about 7,500 (Critically Endangered).

The Little Rock zoo has created a wishlist for Berani and her new baby, and you can make a gift purchase of items like prunes, toys and oatmeal here! What a cute idea to welcome this new baby!
